Here's what's FRESH this week: Orange egg yolks, popovers, grubs, and JFK Jr.
Happy Sunday! Here’s a peek at what I’ve been eating, watching, reading, and more!
My chickens are officially over winter. They hate walking on the snow or even looking at the snow, it seems! So I’ve been treating them with extra snacks like sunflower seeds, dried grubs, and all kinds of kitchen scraps including wilted greens, veggies tops and ends, and salmon skin (they love that, as do our corgis!).
And right now, get a FREE bag of dried black soldier fly larvae (a $25.99 value) when you add them to your cart and purchase any two supplements. Valid through March 1st only.
You might have read some of the uproar on social media, supposedly “outing” a certain egg brand for trying to scam customers by adding ingredients to their flock’s feed to artificially color the egg yolks so they were more vibrant. I have just two things to say about that:
Nearly every egg and feed brand (and I, myself) adds ingredients to their hens’ diet that make the yolks more orange. You’re fooling yourself if you think they don’t.
Many of those ingredients are actually nutritious for your flock. Things like marigold, basil, parsley, kale, pumpkins, watermelon, and leafy greens all have great health benefits for chickens. So it’s not really manipulative or shady. It’s actually beneficial.
Yes, free range hens will lay eggs with deep orange yolks, because grass and weeds also do that, but free ranging is also more dangerous for flocks - and not possible in many areas much of the year. Just food for thought.
You can read more about what makes egg yolks orange here.
My popovers with ginger pear butter are so good! And easier to make than you might think. They turn out best in a popover pan, but you can use a muffin tin in a pinch. Get my recipe.
I worked on Wall Street from 1988 through 1995, and while I never saw him personally, I remember lots of my friends spotting JFK Jr. biking around the City, and of course he was always in the newspapers. I also remember the moment I heard that he and Carolyn and her sister had died in a plane crash. So, I feel a personal connection to their story, which is being chronicled in a miniseries on Hulu/Disney+. I watched the first three episodes and am looking forward to the rest of the series. Love the family or not, and whether this depiction is completely accurate or not, it’s a compelling story.
And finally, a rare moment of peace. These two go at it all day except for brief naps to recharge. Fortunately, we can just open the door and shoo them outside to wrestle and chase each other in the snow until they tire themselves out. We’re hoping they’ll settle down… eventually.
Oh, and in other news, Cooper's little sister's name is Ingrid! Read all about the saga of naming Enid/Shelby/Sadie/Ingrid in my latest instagram post.
Well, that was our week. See you next Sunday!

Love the Corgis ! They look very calm at present . They are gorgeous and look very happy and healthy!
